Week of October 17th
This week in reading... We finished our whole class novel, Number the Stars. Please ask your child about this wonderful historical fiction. Students enjoyed the story and were shocked that most of the events in the story really happened.
We will read nonfiction text for the next couple of weeks, focusing on summarizing. The next whole class novel we will be reading is called, The Big Lie. This is a non fiction book that is similar to Number the Stars. The students will compare and contrast the two stories.
This week in writing... We will continue to work on writing in complete sentences and using capital letters with appropriate punctuation. Our focus will be to write a well composed summary using a variety of strategies.
Shortly after that we will switch back to fiction writing. As we learn point of view, students will have opportunities to write in first, second, and third person.
This week in social studies... We are starting our next unit, the southeast region of the United States. Students will have a quiz on the states and capitals of this region. I have included a website below to help your child study for it at home.

Week of October 3rd
This week in reading... We will continue our whole class novel, Number the Stars. We will discuss the story elements (setting, character development, conflict, and resolution) as we delve into this historical fiction.
Please ensure your child reads nightly for 40 minutes. Students are required to take AR tests on each book they read. Accelerated Reader is an online program that assesses student's comprehension on each book he or she reads. This holds students accountable and allows me to ensure students are reading and comprehending books read. At the beginning of the school year each student took a test to determine their appropriate AR goal. Students are expected to meet their AR goal each quarter. I remind students what percentage they should be at weekly. For instance by this Friday students should be at 50% of their goal. Each quarter a new goal is set. Thank you for your support at home.
This week in writing... We will continue writing fictional stories using figurative language (metaphors, similes, and personification).
This week in social studies... We will end our northeast unit by doing a project that highlights the five themes of geography pertaining to the northeast region of the U.S. Our unit test will be this Friday, October 14th. A study guide will be going home tomorrow, October 10th. Or you can obtain one through the following link.
