Extra Resources for ESOL students are available at (https://sudleyes.pwcs.edu/class_pages/e_s_o_l) or email Mrs. Timothy at timothrs@pwcs.edu

None of this work is required right now!!!!!

There are also a variety of websites to help you have
FUN ( inner left and top) and continue to learn as you wish.

I have put together (on the far left)
our Daily Websites that we have been working with, your word studies, national geographic and scholastic.

Writing can be therapeutic when you are worried and stuck inside.  You may just want to tell your story every day or create an imaginary story or make a book with multiple chapters about you or any body else.  OR if you need ideas, there are 2 tiles that are purple that have ideas for 15 minute writing or pictures to prompt a story. Just like reading, writing can take you to a new world that can distract you.  Try it you may like it.

Take this time to explore books or writing that you do not have time to try when we are in school all the time!!!!!  Enjoy!!!!!

Unit 6 Author Study

As I told you, our next
Unit 6 is an author study which will start right after Spring break. Those who were in school on Friday got your books and packets for that.  Those who were not there can listen to your book on UTUBE with your parent's supervision.  We will be starting this when you get back(April 15), so it is not required that you start this right now.  For those who wish to check it out,  embedded in the chart, I have put your assignment by reading group, the author's webpage, a biography of your author and summaries of your books. (all at the bottom and right of the chart)

UNIT 4 Non-Fiction B

We will be revisiting non-fiction text features and structures and then investigating functional texts.  We will continue to strengthen students' ability to think about non-fiction texts, since this will be the bulk of their future in school.  The more skills and alternate perspectives we can use will make students better readers and stronger students for their future careers.  We will be using functional texts as well as non-fiction paired passages to compare and contrast multiple passages.  This will be coupled with research writing to make the knowledge of skills deeper.

UNIT 3 Historical Fiction/ Book Clubs

This unit will begin with comparing paired passages.  We will compare fiction with non-fiction and non-fiction with itself.  Each group will compare passages, but the classes will compare whole books with the use of mentor texts.  They will write reflections on each text and then compare like texts.
Next, students will use all of their metacognitive skills on specific
non-fiction texts to practice all of their knowledge of the year's skills at once. We look at vocabulary, figurative language, character analysis and the plotline. Using different texts,  5th graders will concentrate on finding the main idea in non-fiction texts.  All students will use writing skills to reinforce their reading.  This will lead to book clubs to reinforce skills with all forms of fiction.
We will be using Snow Treasure as our second novel study.  This historical fiction book based on a true story is both captivating and descriptive.  We look at vocabulary, figurative language, character analysis and the plotline.

UNIT 5 Poetry

This is our Poetry unit.  We will start by going over figurative language and brainstorming so students can create their own similes, metaphors, etc.  This will be followed by looking for figurative language in actual poems.  After learning the elements of poetry students will analyze poems together and eventually on their own.

We will be reading and analyzing a novel written in the form of a poem.  Hopefully, this will be exciting for 5th graders as they prepare for extra reading and writing in middle school.  They will also be creating their own poetry balls with their own creative poems.

UPCOMING EVENTS

If you did not sign up and wish to meet with Mr. Sloane, Mr. Coburn, Mr. Rodgers or myself please email us with 3 possible times between 12 and 7 on Tuesday, November 5.

Field Trip will be all day November 7 to the Caverns.

 UNIT 4 Non-Fiction

5th grade will be studying both text features and text structures in non-fiction. The year started reading passages about the different regions and working hard at taking notes and turning those notes into summaries.

We will review text features and re-teach text structures.  Special emphasis will be placed on making sure students can recognize text structure in a given passage.  X-Zone books and biographies will be used with many different graphic organizers to teach and practice forming summaries of full books.  The notes in those organizers will be transformed into essays for the writing piece.

UNIT 1 & 2 Fiction

We have started the year by learning about fiction.  Students are learning how all of the elements, character traits and the changes in characters help students dig even deeper into their understanding of a book.

The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe is used as the introductory novel to help reinforce the reading and thinking skills that they have been taught.  Since this is a fantasy book with many different levels of understanding, it lends itself to "thinking about reading."  The characters are strong and can help deepen their understanding of characters, how they change and how they influence each other.

We have also been reading full novels in Guided reading.  Each group has been asked to read, answer questions and complete a flip book as a summative assessment to prove their mastery of the standards related to fiction comprehension.

WRITING INTRO

"Just right books" was the first order of business this year as in past years.  Students have been given a range for their reading.  They should be reading 30 minutes every night and keeping track on the yellow log sheets that they have in their baggies with their books.  They will take AR tests to reach their goal of 30 points once all technical difficulties are resolved.

They will also have Word Study throughout the year to focus on prefix, suffix and root words.  This will be used in order to empower students to broaden their own vocabulary by enriching their knowledge of the basic roots and the skills to recognize those roots.  It will hopefully engage them in discussions about words.

Parental Involvement Can Increase Reading Improvement

· MAKE A READING PLAN WITH YOUR CHILD SO THEY CAN REACH THEIR GOAL.

· Make sure your child reads every night.

· Ask them about what they are reading.

· Ask them to read to you.

· Have family Read Alouds where everyone is involved in a good book.

· Share some of your favorite books from when you were younger.

· Even if they are listening to reading, ask them to read along so they see the words they are hearing.

· The more students read, the better they will get.

· Ask them to share their inner conversations as they read.

· Make sure you encourage thinking while reading.
