Overview of Gifted Education

START

The START (Strategies for Teaching and Reaching for Talent) program offers gifted education services for identified students in kindergarten through third grade.  Students are identified based on specific academic aptitude in the areas of language and/or mathematics.  Because of their advanced academic abilities, gifted students need acceleration and enrichment, as well as opportunities for creative and critical thinking. The START goals are to challenge students to develop their skills in thinking critically, creatively, and reflectively.  Students are offered a variety of educational opportunities that extend and enrich the county curriculum and support the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).

SIGNET
The SIGNET (Students Involved in Gifted Needs in Education Today) program offers gifted education services for identified students in fourth and fifth grades. Students are identified based on specific academic aptitude in the areas of language and/or mathematics. Because of their advanced academic abilities, gifted students need acceleration and enrichment, as well as opportunities for creative and critical thinking.  The SIGNET goals are to challenge students to develop their skills in thinking critically, creatively, and reflectively.  Students are offered a variety of educational opportunities that extend and enrich the county curriculum, support the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs), and encourage the exploration of areas of interest.
